The Breed

Welcome to the Siberian breed.  Siberians are a medium to large breed of cat.  They have thick triple coats and are described as round.  Everything about them should be round.  Round eyes, round head, rounded ears, rounded bodies.  Round, round, round.  Many judges have described them as whiskey barrels on tree trunk legs.  This is what sets them apart from the Maine Coon and Norwegian Forest Cat.  The Siberian is a cat of great "heft", strength and muscle.

As described above, the Siberian has a triple coat.  It contains "down" to keep them warm in the cold Russian winters, the actual fur and then the "guard hairs" which help keep them from matting.  Siberians are very difficult to get wet.  Care should be taken with their fur during the shedding times of the year.  This is when matting can occur. When Spring changes to warm weather they will shead the down coat over a few weeks time and a simple combing withy a grayhound comb will strip away the loose hair without much trouble.

The Siberian is an intelligent cat.  They are problem solvers.  They are easy to train and are loaded in personality.  They learn their names and will follow their person from room to room.  They will greet you at the door and miss you while you're away.  They make chirping and trilling sounds instead of a regular meow.  They are great with children. They are truly gentle giants.

Siberian History

The Siberian is a natural breed from Russia.  They have been around for more than 1,000 years.  They were said to have first appeared in Siberia and the Urals.  The first Siberians were brought to the United States in 1990's by Elizabeth Terrell.  Starpoint Cattery was formed.  Elizabeth started her cattery with Kaliostro Vasenjkovich (male) and Ofhelia Romanova (female) and Nania Romanova (female).

The Siberians have been showing in the Championship class in TICA since 1996.  In 2001 TICA has it's first Siberian as Cat of the Year.  IW SGC Treskuchiy Sibirskiy Moroz Mur, aka Irdie.  Irdie was a Russian import bred by Larisa Galiaskarova and owned by Judy Chappetta.

The Allergy Factor

Siberian cats are hypoallergenic for approximately 90% of alllergy suffers.   This is because they are lacking or are low in the protein in their saliva that most people are allergic to (FEL D-1). Be aware that Siberian cats are the only breed of cat that is missing this protein.  Hair has nothing to do with the allergic reaction people get.  It's only the protein that is the problem.  Short hair and no hair cats does not reduce reaction to dander. That said lgE late trigger anti-body sufferers may find that the Siberian is not a hypo-allergenic cat for them.  No one can guarantee that you will not react to a Siberian.  It is different for each person.  If you are an allergy sufferer you should visit with a Siberian in person.  Pet them, rub their fur, rub your eyes.  Check multiple Siberians. So far to date we have had only one person claim a reaction and it was managed by an occasional bath and that solved the problem

Siberians are a wonderful, fascinating breed.  They come in a rainbow of colors including colorpoints.  You are encouraged to visit with the Siberian breed.  Get to know them.  Let them into your heart.  You won't be disappointed.

Izzy wasn't happy with the photo that we had of her here.  So she went to photographer, Diana Starr and had a photo shoot.  Once we get the photos back from Diana, and Izzy approves of the photos, we will post a new one of her here.
